VISUALIZATION PROJECT

Image
ANNOTATED IMAGE     For this project, I decided to do an annotated image. I felt that this was the most appropriate because the students will be reading a graphic novel, and they probably won’t know certain graphic novel terms that are important or what to look for when they’re annotating. I chose this image specifically because it also has some things that can be annotated based on the lens the students would be using for this unit (which is gender/gender norms ), and it has a few good examples of graphic novel vocabulary words I would want students to know. To differentiate the two different reasons for annotating, I have added two different types of clickable points. The blue circles are showing what to look for/how to annotate for gender norms within the story. The red circles show different graphic novel terms and what they mean.  This process definitely deepened my understanding of graphic novel terminology and how authors/illustrators use all of the space on the pages to show th

TEXT SET

Image
INTRODUCTION Hello! Welcome to my third blog post!  I’ve decided that my imaginary class that I would be teaching these texts in would be a Film and Literature Class. It would be an elective that’s only available to upperclassmen in high school. As for how the texts would all work together, I would have different units that cover different “lenses” in this class. For example, in the gender lens unit, students would analyze different gender norms, tropes, etc. in the movies/books that we read. In this class, I would be focusing on three lenses: race, gender, and mental health.  **Also, I would have students all get permission slips filled out by parents/guardians in the beginning of the semester because some of the movies are rated ‘R’ and I wouldn’t want that to be an issue halfway through the semester. The entire text set would be listed out for parents/guardians in the beginning, so they can choose to allow their student to take the class or not. PRINT O’Malley, Bryan. Scott Pilgri

intro to my inquiry topic!

Image
It's taken me a few days of back and forth to settle on what I'd like to inquire about for my blog topic. After much consideration, I've decided that I'd like to explore the idea of using film as a medium for students to learn how to analyze certain themes and issues critically. Oftentimes, classes like film analysis are not available to high school students, especially in high schools that are underfunded and overcrowded. However, I think that a class that uses film as a means for literary analysis would be beneficial for engaging the students who might not be as interested in reading. It could also help with engaging students who are not as strong in their reading. There are many ways to go about teaching a film analysis/literature class, but I have never taken a film class that doubled as an English class, so I'm not sure exactly how they are structured. For what I do know: I know that it would be an English class offered to upperclassmen because it would proba

welcome to literary lavris 2.0!

Image
hello! my name is katie lavris, and welcome to my blog! i used this blog for a class with candance last semester, hence the "2.0" in the title. my professional goals are not extremely detailed, but i would like to become a high school english teacher. the goal is to also help out with the drama club, speech team, and film club if the school i'm at has those already. if not, it would be super fun to start those! those are the things that really helped me push through high school, and i think that i could really help current students by giving them those outlets for their creativity. i recently found out that the school i'm student teaching at doesn't have a drama program at all, and i'm interested in seeing what i can do as a student teacher to change that!  i've attached a link that goes over the benefits of having drama clubs in schools! https://www.nfhs.org/articles/students-gain-many-benefits-from-involvement-in-theatre/

zine!

Image
For this project, I ended up making a zine. I was originally going to make a movie trailer, but I have no video editing skills whatsoever, so it was a bit difficult to start. I thought a zine would be great for this book because there are a lot of visuals you get while reading. There was also a lot of color symbolism throughout the book, so I figured I could play into that a little bit. I’ve never made a zine that was picture based before, so it was pretty challenging because I am not gifted artistically. This was a really fun project, though, and I’m glad I got to try something different. I enjoyed mentally channeling my middle school self to make this art project!!
